China Customs: Red and Green Channel Explained

Last Updated: June 17, 2026·Foreigners arriving at Chinese airports·4 min read

In a Nutshell

Choose the Green Channel if you have nothing to declare, the Red Channel if you carry cash above the limit or restricted goods — X-ray scanning is random and selective, not universal.

Prerequisites

  • Complete your customs declaration form (if needed) before approaching the channel
  • Know whether your luggage contains any declarable items

Step-by-Step

After you collect your luggage and before you exit into the arrival hall, you pass through a customs inspection zone. This is where China Customs screens incoming baggage for prohibited items, undeclared goods, and items exceeding duty-free limits.

The Two-Channel System

China Customs operates a Red and Green Channel system, consistent with international customs practice. The choice is yours, and your legal responsibility.

Green Channel — "Nothing to Declare"

Use this channel if ALL of the following are true:

  • You are not carrying cash exceeding 20,000 RMB or USD 5,000 equivalent in foreign currency
  • You are not carrying goods for commercial purposes
  • You are within the duty-free limits for alcohol (1,500 ml) and tobacco (400 cigarettes)
  • You are not carrying any prohibited or restricted items
  • You do not have goods that require a customs permit (gold, wildlife products, etc.)

Walking through the Green Channel is a legal declaration that you have nothing to declare. It is not a shortcut — it is a statement.

Red Channel — "Goods to Declare"

Use this channel if ANY of the following apply:

  • You are carrying cash above the declaration threshold
  • You have goods that exceed duty-free allowances
  • You are carrying items intended for commercial sale or business use
  • You carry restricted items that require a permit
  • You are unsure whether something needs to be declared

At the Red Channel, you hand your completed customs declaration form to the officer. They may ask to inspect the declared items. If everything matches and is within permitted limits, you are cleared. If duties apply, the officer calculates and collects them on the spot.

How Baggage Screening Works

China Customs uses a combination of approaches:

  • X-ray machines: Large scanners at the exit of the baggage claim area. Officers monitor screens and may flag bags for further inspection based on the X-ray image.
  • Random selection: Some travelers are randomly selected for manual inspection regardless of which channel they choose.
  • Targeted inspection: Officers may single out travelers based on origin, behavior, or appearance of luggage.

If selected for inspection, you will be asked to open your suitcase. Officers typically check specific items flagged by X-ray rather than emptying the entire bag. Cooperate calmly — this is routine.

What Gets Flagged

Items that commonly draw customs attention during X-ray:

  • Dense rectangular blocks (could be large amounts of cash)
  • Organic shapes (food, plants, animal products)
  • Electronic devices in multiples (suggesting commercial intent)
  • Bottles in unusual quantities
  • Items with metallic density that do not match typical personal items

Common Pitfalls

Common Pitfalls

  • Assuming Green Channel means no checks. The Green Channel is not a free pass. You can still be stopped, X-rayed, and searched. The channel choice determines which legal framework applies — choosing Green while carrying declarable items escalates the violation.
  • Gifts still in original packaging. A suitcase with five identical boxed watches or phones looks like commercial importation. Even if these are personal gifts, customs may assess duty or suspect intent to resell.
  • Food items. Bringing fruit, meat, or dairy through customs is generally prohibited. Even a forgotten apple from the airplane meal can cause a problem if the officer notices it.
  • "I did not know" is not a defense. Ignorance of the rules does not exempt you from penalties. Declare when in doubt — it is much safer than being caught with undeclared goods.

What Happens If You Are Caught with Undeclared Items

  • Minor violations (small amounts of undeclared food, slightly over the alcohol limit): Items confiscated, warning issued.
  • Moderate violations (undeclared cash above the limit, commercial-looking goods): Items may be held, fines may be assessed, and a record is created.
  • Serious violations (weapons, drugs, large-scale smuggling, endangered wildlife products): Criminal prosecution, possible detention, entry ban.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. While waiting for your luggage, review what is in your bags. Be honest with yourself about whether anything requires declaration.
  2. Fill out the declaration form if needed. Blank forms are available at small desks near the customs area entrance.
  3. Collect your luggage and proceed to the customs zone.
  4. Choose your channel. If you have nothing to declare, walk through Green. If you have declarable items, go to Red and hand over your form.
  5. If stopped for inspection, open your bag when asked, point out any items the officer enquires about, and answer questions directly.
  6. If cleared, proceed to the arrival hall. If issues arise, stay calm and follow the officer's instructions.

Red Line Warning

Choosing the Green Channel while carrying undeclared restricted goods counts as intentional evasion. Consequences range from confiscation to fines and criminal charges for serious violations.
